It was a historic night at the Staples Center as Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James cemented his place in basketball history.

On February 7, 2023, James scored career point to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record that had stood for 39 years.

James hit a fall-away jumper from the left elbow with 10.9 seconds left in the third quarter to pull the Lakers within 104-99 for his 36th point of the night. He finished with 38 points in the Lakers’ 133-130 loss and now has 38,390 points.

The entire arena erupted when the three-time NBA champion sunk a layup late in the third quarter, moving him past Abdul-Jabbar and into first on the all-time scoring list. Afterward, an emotional James embraced his teammates and coaches on the court before receiving recognition from fans around the world via social media. 

"This is a moment I will never forget," James said in an interview post-game. "I’m so proud to have passed Kareem and proud to be part of this great sport."

James finished the night with 38 points, leaving no doubt that he had earned his place as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

After the game, fans stayed past buzzer for a standing ovation for James and Abdul-Jabbar, who made an appearance on court together to honor the accomplishment.  It was truly a historic evening that basketball fans won’t soon forget.  Congratulations to LeBron!
